Mallory Fields, captain of the Nicholls cheerleading squad, has been busy participating in classes and school events. However, she was able to take some time out to discuss her cheerleading experience and what the squad is doing this semester.

Q: What is your experience?

A: “I have been cheerleading since junior high and all throughout high school. This is my fourth year on the squad at Nicholls.”

Q: How long have you been captain?

A: “This is my second year as captain.”

Q: Do you work with the new mascot?

A: “We have worked with the new mascot a little at a couple of games and at the pep rally.”

Q: What are cheerleaders doing for the homecoming events?

A: “We’re doing a few things for the introduction of the court, and we’re doing a lot with the band. We want to help spread spirit.”

Q: What are your goals for the cheerleading squad this school year?

A: “I want the squad to have fun with the college experience, and I would like for cheerleading to be an outlet for the experience and the work. The more you support school, the easier it is to handle classes because you have friends to fall back on.”

Q: What is the most exciting part of being a cheerleader?

A: “I like to stunt with the cheerleaders. And it’s nice to build relationships with people on campus who are going through the same thing you are. You build bonds.”

Q: What do you think about the new cheerleading coach?

A: “He’s different, and he has a lot of knowledge and experience. He’s working with us to be better as a team and helping us advance our skills.

Q: What is the hardest part of being a cheerleader?

A: “The time. A lot of time must be given into activities. To balance school with practice and workouts is a task.”

Q: How is the student turnout so far for games and spirit events?

A: “So far it’s been good. For the first game, it rained, and we still maintained a good crowd. Even if there’s fewer people at an event, the people who are there always have good spirit.”

Q: Why should students come out to support the teams?

A: “It makes the college experience more fun to support your school’s team and come together with other students. Also, the more you support your school helps you with your studies.
