The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders at Nicholls will be holding its second annual “Unmasking Their Potential” dyslexia conference Saturday in Bollinger Memorial Student Union. The Dyslexia Center provides assistance to college students in all majors who have dyslexia or a related disorder. The center also provides a comprehensive assessment for children, adolescents and adults. Screenings are available for children in between the ages of 4 and 6. After-school tutoring programs in Thibodaux, Houma and Morgan City are also available.

The conference will be open to all parents, students, teachers, guidance counselors and anyone else interested in helping people with dyslexia. People can register for the conference at www.nicholls.edu/dyslexia or by calling 985-448-4212. On-site registration will be available at the door from 7:30 to 8:00 a.m. There is a $65 registration fee, which includes a meal in the Galliano Hall cafeteria.

The conference will cover various topics from how students learn to read and study and feature various types of assisted learning technology available such as computer software that reads textbooks aloud.

The conference will include several sessions covering certain aspects of living with dyslexia, both in and out of school. Karen Chauvin, director of The Louisiana Center for Dyslexia and Related Learning Disorders, said sessions will cover the emotional side of living with dyslexia and how to cope with it during the 16 hours that the students are outside of school.

Linda Farrel, an educational consultant, will be speaking at this year’s conference about acquiring the skill to read.

Chauvin said last year’s Conference was very successful and had over 200 attendees. She is expecting Saturday’s conference to be just as successful.

Raising Cane’s in Thibodaux, located on Canal Blvd., is currently donating a dollar from each purchase to the Dyslexia Center.
