The Lady Colonels volleyball team remains optimistic despite falling to all of its opponents in the Tiger Invitational in Memphis. Memphis proved to be a very talented and accurate team; however, the Lady Colonels put up a fight all the way to the end. The Lady Colonels won the first set of the game 30-18, but the next two sets were lost 30-28 and 30-28. The Lady Colonels were worthy opponents for the Memphis Tigers, but fell by two games.
Senior Casey Wirwille and sophomore Amy Whitehead laid down 33 assists for the Lady Colonels in the game against the Memphis Tigers.
In their second game of the day, the Lady Colonels took on the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Lady Colonels came out strong and confident but in the end faltered to the Bulldogs, 0-3.
The second set of the match was the best of the three as far as performance is concerned for the Lady Colonels.
Aaliyah Muhammad had 10 kills followed by Kindra Halverson’s eight kills. Even with the performance of Muhammad and Halverson, the Lady Colonels fell 30-21, 30-23 and 30-19 rounding out the second game and the first day.
Nicholls saw the Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans and the Austin Peay Lady Governors on the second day of the Tiger Invitational. Unfortunately, Nicholls was unable to secure a victory against either team.
In the first set against the Trojans, the Colonels were down by two, and the Trojans held onto their lead to secure a victory.
The Lady Colonels had a small lead early in the second match, but again fell.
The Lady Colonels played a better game in the third set, not letting UALR get a big lead early on, but in the end came up short.
Sophomore Rachel Spreen managed eight kills and Kindra Halverson had seven kills followed by Chelsea Dockrey with four and Amy Whitehead with three.
The match against UALR ended in a victory for Arkansas-Little Rock and yet another loss for Nicholls at 30-18, 30-17, 30-27.
During the final match against the Lady Governors, Nicholls came out with an added intensity in the first set of the match, taking the lead back from Austin Peay during certain spots, but once the team hit the 21-point mark, found trouble getting its offense going again and allowed Austin Peay to earn the victory.
Again, the Lady Colonels started the second set with a fire that would get the team off to a good start, but midway through the set found trouble offensively, giving the Lady Governors another opportunity to take the set from Nicholls.
The fatigue of playing four games in two days may have played a factor in the third set, as Nicholls was only able to tie the game once early in the set at 4-4. Nicholls would finish strong but Austin Peay had a good enough lead to ensure victory.
The Lady Colonels, hoping to secure at least one victory before the end of the tournament, came out in the first set very strong.
The Lady Colonels stormed their way to 21 points in the first se,t but in the end faltered and lost the set.
The second and third sets of the match proved to be yet more upsets for the Lady Colonels.
