University Police arrested Jariuis Jarvis, general studies junior from Donaldsonville and member of the Colonel football team, June 21 on drug and weapon charges after police searched his apartment and vehicle. Jarvis allegedly was in possession of marijuana and a loaded 9-mm handgun.

University Police officers were issuing citations in the La Maison du Bayou parking lot when they smelled what they believed to be the odor of burned marijuana while standing near a white 1996 Chevrolet Caprice. Officers also noticed a small amount of what they believed to be marijuana on the dashboard of the vehicle.

Officers learned that the vehicle belonged to Jarvis who gave University Police permission to search his La Maison du Bayou apartment and vehicle.

During the search, University Police reported finding what they believed to be marijuana, a loaded 9-mm handgun and a box of ammunition inside his bedroom. Officers reported finding a bag of what they believed to be marijuana in the driver side compartment, marijuana seeds on the front passenger seat and one round of ammunition underneath the rear back seat.

Jarvis was booked and jailed at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center where he later posted bond and was released.

Jarvis was a defensive end on the 2007 Colonels football team. The Daily Comet reported he is currently suspended from the team.

Brandon Rizzuto, sports information director, declined to comment on the suspension.

According to Eugene Dial, vice president for Student Affairs and Enrollment Services, Jarvis is awaiting a hearing with the University’s judicial officer on possible violations to the student code of conduct.

“We have to give the student a chance to present their case,” Dial said.

According to Dial, the case against Jarvis is ongoing and a final decision has not been made.

In the past, if this were the student’s first offense, the consequences facing the student at the University would consist of probation, community service, a fine and drug screening, Dial said. Jarvis may also be forced to move out of his on-campus apartment.

In addition to possible code of conduct violations, Jarvis faces any criminal charges that may be brought against him by the district attorney.
