Custodians spent summer cleaning graffiti

Custodians spent long hours taking graffiti off the stalls in many of the bathrooms during the summer. According to many of the custodians, graffiti is not as bad as it once was. Many of the bathrooms around campus that had graffiti have been restored.

“The Powel White Hall bathrooms had the worst girls’ bathrooms on campus. The graffiti in the bathrooms is not everywhere, just mostly on the stalls. Some places have more graffiti than others. It is not as much as it used to be,” custodian manger James Burrell said.

Many of the bathrooms have been restored over the summer. The custodian staff spent many hours cleaning the bathrooms.

“The bathrooms that are the worst are in Long Hall,” custodian Shirley Duncan said.

“Peltier Hall was bad, but the custodians did a really good job of restoring it. We try to make the bathrooms cleaner and more adequate for students to use them,” Burrell said. “I think that the students will write on them again. Students will do it no matter what. I find that there are a lot of religious symbols on the stalls. No matter where you are, students will always write on the walls.”

Sometimes the graffiti on the walls is hard to remove. When the students use small paintbrushes to write on the stalls or when they use ink pens and dig it into the stalls it is very difficult to clean. Once the stalls get a lot of graffiti on them, they are replaced. It takes a lot of scrubbing for the ink to come clean. When students dig the ink pens into the wood, the whole door has to be replaced.

“I hate it when people write on the walls It is disrespectful,” Terri Sample, freshman from Schriever, said.

Some people do not mind the graffiti as compared to others who are more disgusted with it. There are also drawings on the wall.

“I have not noticed any graffiti in any of the bathrooms; however, the desks and beds have quite a few things written on them,” Sabrina Martin, freshman from New Hampshire, said.
