Defense rules as Phi Mu defeats Tri Sigma 7-0 in triple overtime

With both teams defense suffocating each other’s offense for nearly 100 minutes, Phi Mu used a touchdown pass in triple overtime to defeat Tri Sigma 7-0 in women’s intramural action at the intramural field last Wednesday.
Using the collegiate overtime format in which both teams received possession of the ball for a series on their opponents 20-yard line, both offenses failed to score any touchdown to take the lead.
On the first play from scrimmage in the third overtime, Phi Mu quarterback Ashlie Rizk, general family and consumer science senior from Kenner, connected on a 20-yard touchdown pass to receiver Cathy Colwell, accounting junior from Thibodaux to take a 7-0 lead.
Rizk said the touchdown strike to Colwell in the back of the end zone caught Tri Sigma off-guard.
“Cathy had just gotten back from golf practice and came in and caught a sideline pass that they couldn’t guard,” Rizk said.
After an incomplete pass on their possession, Phi Mu ended the game when Colwell intercepted a pass on second down by Tri Sigma quarterback Jackie Blanchard, culinary arts sophomore from Thibodaux.
Rizk completed 39 percent of her passes for 29 yards, a touchdown and an interception. She also rushed for 13 yards. Blanchard completed 31 percent of her passes for 12 yards and three interceptions. She rushed for 20 yards against Phi Mu.
Phi Mu receivers Britney Victoriano, family and consumer science junior from Lafitte; Ashlee Champagne, freshman from Houma and Krystal Boudreaux, allied health freshman from Thibodaux, each caught passes against Tri Sigma.
Tri Sigma receivers Megan Bourg, dietetics freshman from Houma and Kate Leblanc, biology sophomore from Thibodaux, each caught passes.
Phi Mu defensive back Ashlee Champagne, freshman from Houma, contributed an interception to end the first half.
Defensively for Tri Sigma, receiver Britney Price, marketing freshman from Bourg, intercepted a Rizk pass.
Although the final result was not pleasing, Blanchard said she is proud of the way Tri Sigma performed.
“We had only one practice, but I think we did an awesome job with the game today,” Blanchard said.Goodfellas 29, NSU Chargers 0
Rattled by the defense of the Goodfellas, the NSU Chargers never got on track offensively as they fell 29-0 to the Goodfellas last Wednesday in men’s intramural action.
Although he completed 50 percent of his passes, NSU Chargers quarterback Johnathan Sterling, culinary arts freshman from Alexandria, stayed on the run because of the pressure by defensive lineman Marlon Prout, business administration freshman from Boothville and James Butler, mass communication junior from Kenner. Both Prout and Butler sacked Sterling four times.
Sterling said the NSU Chargers simply fell apart offensively and defensively against the Goodfellas.
“We had momentum coming into this game, but I guess we just weren’t ready physically. I really don’t even know what happened. It just went by so fast,” Sterling said.
Butler said the NSU Chargers played the Goodfellas at the wrong time of the season.
“We came out on our A game, and I guess the Chargers didn’t. We executed really well on everything,” Butler said.
The Goodfellas were led offensively by John Carroll, allied health junior from Boothville, who caught four touchdown passes from quarterback Duriel Hayes, accounting senior from New Orleans. Carroll also added one interception and two pass blocks for the game.
Hayes completed 77 percent of his passes for three touchdown passes, a interception and a touchdown run. NSU Chargers defensive back Traville Federick intercepted a Hayes pass in the first half.
Calvin Johnson, freshman from Reserve; Johnathan Sam, biology freshman from New Orleans; Brennan Smith, freshman from New Orleans and Carlos Smith, freshman from New Orleans each caught passes for the NSU Chargers.

IRIE 40, Stray Dawgs 0
In men’s intramural action last Wednesday, IRIE used offensive and defensive pressure to shutout the Stray Dawgs 40-0.
With a fast-paced high percentage offensive attack, IRIE outscored the Stray Dawgs 20-0 in the first half.
IRIE quarterback Matt Ellender, business administration senior from Houma, threw three touchdowns against the Stray Dawgs. He connected on touchdown passes to receivers David Melancon, biology freshman from Thibodaux, Matt Shelly, allied health senior from Thibodaux and Jason Daigle, psychology senior from Houma.
IRIE’s second quarterback Donald Spahr, administration senior from Luling, also threw for three touchdowns. Brian Blank, biology freshman from Thibodaux, George Civitanovich, senior from Thibodaux and Melancon each caught a Spahr touchdown pass.
Stray Dawgs quarterback Kevin Anders, health and physical education freshman from New Orleans, completed five-of-10 passes and two interceptions. Backup quarterback Sean McKay, freshman from New Orleans, completed five-for-nine for 25 yards.
IRIE completed 76 percent of their passes, while the Stray Dawgs completed 53 percent.
Wide receiver Jerry Stevenson, freshman from New Orleans, Andre Kelly, freshman from New Orleans and Jamal Thompson, freshman from Thibodaux each caught passes for the Stray Dawgs. Defensive back Dorian Russell, freshman from New Orleans, led the defense with an interception.
Ellender said after the game that IRIE’s defense experience benefited them against a new Stray Dawgs team.
“We take defense as our strongest part. We have been here for two to three years, and played the best teams by going to state last year. They are a young team and will start to experience some things,” Ellender said.
McKey said the Stray Dawgs lack of pre-game preparation hurt them against the IRIE.
“We just didn’t do good at all. We were supposed to scout them. We were supposed to look and see what they were doing, and we never did it so that is our loss,” McKey said.
