Colonels win series over Louisiana-Monroe

The Colonels baseball team won its first series of the season over Southland Conference foe Louisiana-Monroe this weekend at Didier Field.B.D. Parker, head baseball coach, said he was pleased with the Colonels (14-23, 4-11 SLC) pitching staff, which allowed a total of 12 runs and 22 hits this weekend.

“We pitched it well this weekend. (Junior) Robbie Hebert was outstanding. (Sophomore) Shawn Leblanc gave us a good start on Saturday, and (junior) Mark Fernandez and (junior) Dustin Roddy were outstanding in relief.”

Junior infielder Anthony Hatch led the Colonels at the plate by going 7-for-12 this weekend against Louisiana-Monroe (18-21, 5-10 SLC) with three doubles, one homerun and four RBI’s to improve his batting average on the season to .404.

“Anthony swung the bat really well for us. He came up big in a couple of situations, and he got some hits for us.”

Although Louisiana-Monroe won the last game 6-1, Parker said senior pitcher Mike Prejean gave the team a great chance to win.

“Mike definitely pitched well enough for us to win on Sunday, but we didn’t play good defense. We had a chance to sweep them, but we played well throughout the entire series.”

With 14 games left in the season, the Colonels are currently at 10th place in the Southland Conference standings. The Colonels remaining Southland Conference series opponents include Northwestern State, Texas State, Lamar and Southeastern.

Although the team is last in the standings, Parker did not rule out the team’s chances for making the Southland Conference tournament.

“It’s pretty hectic right now. Anything can happen. We just have to try to play as well as we can play. We just have to continue to play hard, and then we’ll see what happens.”

Next, the baseball team takes the road for a weekend series against Northwestern State.
