Ozzy’s new CD successful, fun mix of covers

The Prince of Darkness just released his umpteenth album, Under Cover, and you guessed it: it is an entire album of covers. Cover albums are tricky. If done well, they can give fans an idea of what the artist sings in the shower while elevating seminally popular songs into sing-along favorites of a new generation. If done poorly it can be merely an hour or so of bad songs done worse.

Ozzy chose to do it right. His song selection is impeccable, for lack of a better word. He fulfills his often-said fantasy of becoming the fifth Beatle by covering the classic “In My Life” and two Lennon originals, “Woman” and “Working Class Hero.”

He proves he is still a viable rock ‘n’ roller with Mountain’s “Mississippi Queen” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.” And he fulfills his anthem-rocker quota with Moody Blues’ “Go Now” and Mott the Hopple’s (ask your parents) “All the Young Dudes.”

Ozzy adds his unmistakable vocals to these classics and provides his fans with new versions with which to sing along while they are in the shower.

He assembled a new band, which includes Mike Bordin (drums), Jerry Cantrell (guitars) and Chris Wyse (bass). Guest musicians include Ian Hunter, original Mott the Hopple front man; Leslie West, original Mountain guitarist; and Robert Randolph, pedal steel phenomenon.

Do yourself a favor when you pick up this album: Never listen to track 10. Ozzy’s cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” is pop, and Ozzy should not do pop. This version lacks the rock ‘n’ roll sensibility that The Rolling Stones oozed and replaces it with formulaic self-indulgence.
