Colonel baseball team to host training camps

The Colonels baseball team will hold a pitching and catching camp for all high school ball players in grades eight to 12 Nov. 20. Durham said the camp, which is in its first year, is an opportunity for local talent to showcase their abilities.

“They are coming here to learn, and we are putting ourselves in a situation where we are instructing,” Durham said. “It gives us a chance to get an early look at them, and if we feel we need to take a look at them in the spring, then we will do so.”

Pitching coach Kerrick Jackson is in charge of the camp, which will focus more on game-like situations.

“It’s an opportunity for us to promote in our area and get them (high school players) to learn some of the philosophies coach Jackson teaches and what they do,” Durham said. “While they are here, they’ll be throwing bullpens and stuff so the pitchers can throw to catchers in situations where it’s more game-like.”

The camp will be held from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Didier Field and will cost $80 per player if the forms are received before Nov. 16. The team will accept walk-up registrations but at the cost of $100. Lunch will be provided to all participants.

In addition to the pitching and catching camp, the Colonels will hold the High School Showcase on Jan. 21, which is open to all high school players grades nine-12 looking to showcase their athletic abilities.

Unlike the pitching and catching camp, the High School Showcase will be open to all high school players and not limited to just pitchers and catchers.

Durham said holding camps for high school athletes is a way to promote Nicholls.

“It’s a good promotion for our school,” Durham said. “It gives us a chance to teach the fundamentals and techniques. It gives us a chance to get local talent in here and get a look at them before the high school baseball season starts.”

Durham said any student athlete interested in attending the camps can apply in a couple of different ways.
