Region receives new area code

Since Louisiana’s communication needs are growing, Bell South implemented a new area code for several parishes. The new area code, 985, has been in effect since Feb. 12. However, the use of the number will not be mandatory until Oct. 21, a Bell South representative said.

The areas that will be affected by the new number are: the Houma/Thibodaux area, South Lafourche, the North shore and some of the River Parishes including; La Place, Destrehan, Norco, Paradis and Luling.

The 504 area code will be retained in all of Orleans, St. Bernard, Kenner, most of Jefferson and a small portion of Plaquemines’ Parish.

A Bell South representative said the increasing demands of numbers for telephones, computers, wireless, fax and paging were so plentiful that something had to be done. Consequently, the new area code was created.

Everyone affected by the change should plan to update checks, stationery, business cards and any other printed materials that include the area code.

Nicholls does not have any problems with the new number.

“The changing of the area code is not a significant problem or cost factor for the University, because everyone can use his stationery and business cards through October.”

“If it was an immediate change, then it would have caused some problems due to a big waste factor,” Bruno Ruggiero, manager of printing services, said.

Some students have mixed feelings about the new area code.

“I know its necessary because of the amount of numbers needed. However, it is still a big inconvenience,” Jill Navarre, mass communication junior from Cut Off, said.

Courtney Comardelle, office information systems junior from Lockport said, “We’re so used to the 504 number that it is going to be a real aggravation to remember the 985 number.”
