Nicholls’ enrollment has increased by more than 5 percent over the past two years, but parking availability remains unchanged, raising questions about how the university manages space and enforces regulations.
Rising enrollment at Nicholls may leave students struggling to find parking during peak class hours, as the number of available spaces has not increased since 2023, forcing more drivers to compete for the same spots.
In 2023, The Nicholls Worth reported that 90 new parking spots were added to campus, a modest expansion at a time when fall enrollment stood at 5,602 students.
Two years later, that number has climbed to 5,893 students, according to the university’s fall 2025 enrollment statistics—an increase of 291 students, or about 5.2 percent.
The university also notes that purchasing a parking decal does not guarantee a space, only the right to search for one.
Nicholls’ parking rules, last updated in 2021, outline specific zones for students, faculty and staff. Fines range from $15 for minor violations to $250 for unauthorized use of ADA spaces, which are reserved for drivers with disabilities.
Repeat violations can result in booting or towing.
Students, faculty and staff at Nicholls receive color-coded parking decals that designate which lots they are allowed to use — residential, commuter, faculty or staff.
While this system organizes campus traffic, it also limits flexibility. This prevents drivers from parking in lots outside their assigned category, even if spaces are available.
With enrollment climbing and no increase in parking spaces since 2023, these restrictions could influence ticketing patterns and indicate whether parking supply is keeping pace with demand.
The contrast between enrollment growth and stagnant parking availability raises broader questions about campus planning. Students may struggle to find parking and face higher fines if no additional spaces are added in the coming years.
The Nicholls Worth will continue monitoring this issue and reaching out to university representatives for updates on possible changes — whether that means new parking spaces, revisions to regulations or shifts in ticketing patterns as enrollment grows.
