HIM, Jordan Peele’s latest production, garnered attention from fans of Peele, horror and sports as the previews ran; however, it fell far short of the movie it advertised itself to be.
The Plot…
HIM follows the story of Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), a star college quarterback, as he prepares for the draft.
Ahead of the draft combine, Cade suffers a head injury in a solo attack, forcing his draft stock to plummet. However, a second chance arises when his agent gets him the opportunity to train with his favorite quarterback, Isiah White (Marlon Wayans), to prove his worth.
The scenes immediately following the attack perfectly represent the psychological horror of a brain injury, but it soon leaves behind that foundation.
My Opinion…
It ditches this foundation for a plethora of cliches and poorly written and executed body horror scenes as it barrels towards an obvious ending.
Director Justin Tipping refuses to lean on imagery or any tool outside of dialogue and videography to tell the story, leaving a basic plot line.
The best thing this movie offers is a strong soundtrack that lines up well with the beginning scenes of each chapter.
HIM is poorly executed as a horror movie, but that poor execution and over-reliance on cliches turn into a laugh fest.
It is an enjoyable experience if you let yourself laugh, but my rating stands at 4.5/10.
