The bayou is calling. Outside of Nicholls’ classrooms there are festivals, food and folklore awaiting the Colonel community in the heart of Cajun culture.
Less than thirty minutes from Thibodaux, the Greenwood Alligator Farm in Gibson gets up close and personal with massive gators, giving visitors the chance to watch live shows and even hold a baby alligator.

For those with more historic tastes, the Regional Military Museum located in Houma brings the past to life with tanks, vehicles, and exhibits that share local veterans’ stories.
“These are some great options, especially during the hot summer months,” said Tara Morvant, director of marketing and communications for Explore Houma. “Especially for families touring or visiting Nicholls, the entire family can enjoy these activities.”
Nothing says bayou culture quite like festival season. On Oct. 4, downtown Houma throws the MawMaw Walker, a grandparent-themed bash where locals dress up as their favorite Maw Maws and Paw Paws for a lively parade.
Just weeks later, the award-winning Rougarou Fest on Oct. 17–19 takes over with Cajun food, live music, folklore, and the colorful Krewe Ga Rou parade. It is all in celebration of the infamous were-wolf-like creature of bayou legends.
“MawMaw and Rougarou are award-winning events we are really excited about,” Morvant said.
Across Bayou Lafourche, Cody Gray, CEO of the Louisiana Cajun Bayou Visitor Center, highlights more can’t-miss experiences.
High-speed airboat tours in Des Allemands skim past moss-draped cypress trees and sunbathing alligators, while while Thibodaux’s Wetlands Cultural Center immerses visitors in Cajun life through films, exhibits, and live performances

For music lovers, Gray recommends the Cajun Music Jam at Gina’s at the Legion, held the first and third Wednesday of each month.
“This is one of the first big events coming up,” he said. “It’s a true taste of Louisiana’s Cajun Bayou.”
