In the fall of 2016, I became afraid of the media. I was 16 years old, sitting on the couch next to my siblings, quietly watching the presidential debate. Each of the presidential candidates had much to say about the media, and most of it was not pretty. I felt conflicted, confused and afraid. Just to be clear, this is not an article about politics. This is an article about a 16-year-old who decided not to touch the news (of any publication) for a long period. I spent an embarrassing amount of time being tossed around by wave after wave of misinformation.
I felt confused and untrusting. Thus, I decided to be what many might call “willfully ignorant.” Fast forward to the present day – I have found news sources I trust. Daily, I take the time to invest in knowledge, understanding and the truth. Current events drive my discussion with my peers and family. Even though I have changed, I firmly believe that many people affected by the conversations of 2016 have not. Many are still afraid to step out and seek the truth through verified sources in objective settings.
Through my experiences at the Nicholls Worth, I have found opportunities to prove that not only can the media be trustworthy, but also that we are absolutely necessary. Over the past year, our publication has been a source for addressing campus-wide shifts, spotlighting influential individuals, and tackling national issues that directly impact Nicholls’ grounds.
What is the best part?
This year, in the offices of the Colonel Media Group, we will be amplifying our coverage to a wider range of topics and issues across campus, our community and our country.
There’s more.
We need you. The Nicholls Worth needs your voice, your passion and your ambition. To achieve the reach we aim for, we will need to recruit more staff writers and volunteer writers who are reliable and ready to dive headfirst into reporting. In turn, you have the opportunity to build up your confidence and the knowledge of your generation. No prior experience is needed – just initiative and a keyboard. In turn, you will have a portfolio of clippings, more networking connections and meaningful friendships with your fellow writers.
