After years without a dedicated space, the Nicholls Colonettes dance team celebrates a newly renovated studio, building recognition, unity and a stronger presence on campus.
The unveiling of the updated Shaver Gym studio marks a turning point for the Colonettes, who had to navigate limited and inconsistent practice options in the past.
The upstairs gym, previously damaged during a hurricane, long served as a rehearsal space before being closed for repairs.
Thanks to recent renovations—funded by the State of Louisiana and donors John and Palma Shaver, for whom the space is named—the Colonettes now have a consistent location for practices, reflecting their growing presence on campus.
“It feels good to finally get recognized by the school,” said Hannah Martin, an upcoming junior
and Colonette of two years. “What once felt like a small club now feels like a real dance team.”
Nicholls communications director Jerad David emphasized the importance of the upgrade.
“Spirit groups like the Colonettes play an important role in campus pride and involvement. This studio gives
them the consistency they deserve.”
More than just a place to practice, the renovated studio has strengthened the team’s identity.
“It really unifies us and makes us feel like we are a part of Nicholls athletics,” Martin said.
Although there are no plans for additional performing arts facilities, university officials remain open to supporting the performing arts in the future.
For now, the renovated studio represents a significant step forward for the Colonettes and school spirit at Nicholls.
