Nicholls State University’s art department is set to host its annual ArtWorks fundraiser on April 1 at 6 p.m. in Talbot Hall
The event is used to raise funds for art initiatives and student scholarships.
ArtWorks is an immersive event put on by the art department that features a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and interactive art-making opportunities for guests.
All proceeds from the event support educational opportunities for students such as study abroad programs and scholarships that might not otherwise be accessible.
According to the ArtWorks website, student Lila Thomas used an ArtWorks grant to attend a juried art exhibition in Ohio.
“That experience allowed my work to be seen nationally, connect with a diverse group of talented artists and opened a beautiful opportunity for me to be an Artist-In-Residence at DePauw University,” Thomas said.
Graphic Design Professor Trisha Rabalais said the event offers more than financial support—it creates life-changing opportunities for students.
“As an educator, I appreciate the fact that the fundraiser isn’t just about raising money; it’s about opening doors—helping students gain new perspectives, be inspired by different cultures and bring that experience back to enrich the local art scene,” Rabalais said.
Sculpture Professor Michael Williams said that the event’s success relies on collaboration within the art department.
“We couldn’t do it without the help of our students,” Williams said. “Our students are going to be in the hallways directing people, helping out in the studio areas with demonstrations.”
Rabalais expressed that ArtWorks relies on collaboration beyond Nicholls.
“I believe the relationship between Nicholls’ art department and the broader Thibodaux-Houma community is one of mutual enrichment and collaboration,” Rabalais said. “The department serves as both a cultural hub and an incubator for creative talent, providing students with opportunities to engage with the local creative community while also offering the access to fresh artistic perspectives.”
Williams emphasized that the department values the quality of ArtWorks rather than profits.
“Bigger is not always necessarily better, it’s about the quality of the experience,” Williams said.
