The Nicholls State University softball team completed its first conference series sweep of the season with an 11-3 mercy rule win over Lamar University on Senior Day, Saturday.
After scoring eight runs in their final inning of Friday’s double-header the Colonels did it again, scoring eight in the first inning of game three on Saturday.
Senior pitcher/first basemen Molly VandenBout led the scoring effort for the Colonels, scoring on a three-run home run in the first inning.
VandenBout also ended the game, scooping up a ground ball and cutting the runner off at first base.
“The only way I can describe it is full circle,” VandenBout said.
Pitching held steady in the game. Lamar scored three runs all in the second inning.
Following Lamar’s three runs, the Colonels brought in Averi Paden to close out the game. Paden delivered 3.2 scoreless innings for the Colonels.
Paden allowed one hit and picked up a strikeout on the mound.
Paden played a starting role through most of her career, but has recently featured in the closing spot.
Although not her first choice, Paden has learned to embrace her new role.
“I think I’ve found my role as a closing pitcher and it’s working out really well for me,” Paden said. “I come in the game in high pressure situations really well and it’s nice to help my team get a mercy rule win.”
Nicholls’ softball head coach Ron Frost said the sweep is a testament to the work the team has put in all season.
“It’s huge to get the conference sweep and it’s just a testament to the work the girls put in day in and day out,” Frost said.
The Colonels continue play with a mid-week game against the University of Southern Mississippi on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Swanner Field.
