Dr. Fontenot brings marine biology to life at Nicholls

Dr. Quenton Fontenot, a professor at Nicholls State University, immerses students and communities in the captivating world of fish biology.

As a key figure in the biology department, Dr. Fontenots’ Biology of Fishes course goes beyond traditional teaching methods, blending lectures with fieldwork. Students learn about fish classification and collect fish samples through exciting activities like electrofishing in local waters. “We want students to understand why certain fish thrive in different environments,” Dr. Fontenot said.

Located in a region rich with coastal and deep-water species, Nicholls is ideal for studying fish biology. Students examine species such as catfish and redfish, exploring how their unique traits impact survival.

Beyond the classroom, Fontenot connects students with the marine biology community. Next year, he plans to co-host the Southern Division of the American Fishery Society in New Orleans, one of the department’s biggest events. These experiences provide valuable networking opportunities and hands-on exposure to the field.

Whether or not students pursue marine biology, Dr. Fontenot believes everyone can contribute to preserving marine environments, from attending cleanups to learning more about the creatures beneath the waves.

Fontenot and his wife Dr. Allyse Ferrara, a professor of environmental biology at Nicholls, organize community volunteer events to promote environmental awareness. An upcoming initiative includes the Bayou Lafourche Cleanup, where participants witness firsthand the impact of pollution on aquatic ecosystems, raising awareness about environmental preservation.

They also host the Fall International Coastal Cleanup Day at Elmer’s Island, near Grand Isle, attracting up to 200 volunteers. “It’s amazing how big an impact that will have on people doing that for the first time,” Fontenot said.
