Tigers run rule Colonels in rescheduled matchup

The Nicholls State University baseball team lost an intra-state matchup against no. 2 LSU 13-3 in Baton Rouge on Feb 24.

The Colonels began the night with back-to-back hits from seniors Chase Jans and Jaden Collura. 

An error by the LSU third basemen allowed Jans to tag up from third base for the first points of the game, giving Nicholls a 1-0 lead. 

Tigers’ first baseman Jared Jones got on base with a walk ​in the bottom of the first inning. LSU gained momentum soon after as Nicholls put Josh Pearson on base with hit by pitch and infielder Daniel Dickinson drove in the Tigers’ first run with an RBI single to left field.

LSU closed out the inning with a Cade Arrambide run on a walk followed by a two-run single from 2024 Freshman All-SEC shortstop Steven Milam.

The Colonels gave up 10 more runs, scoring two two more runs themselves. 

The Tigers hit .357 while Nicholls hit a .231 average. Karson Irvin led the Colonels in batting going one-for-two, picking up a hit and two runs. 

Nicholls went through three pitchers including starter Jordan Harper who allowed five runs in 3 innings. 

The Colonels’ pitching unit combined for a 9.94 ERA compared to the Tigers 1.42. The Tigers’ leading pitcher, William Schmidt, had an ERA of 1.23 on 60 pitches through 4.2 innings. 

The Colonels return home to face Tulane in another intra-state match up on Tuesday, Feb 25 Ray E. Didier Field at 6:30 p.m.
