Nicholls State University approved a Wi-Fi improvement project worth more than $300,000, for all academic buildings.
Nicholls’ Student Government Association President Jax Badeaux submitted a proposal to the Technology Fee Committee in Fall 2025. He requested funds for a “comprehensive Wi-Fi overhaul” for academic facilities.
Badeaux said he combined similar proposals from other departments to ensure all buildings receive the necessary upgrades.
“Before I put in the request, I didn’t realize that the Department of Business put in a request to get the Wi-Fi redone. Talbot was going to put in a request too […] Instead of having many requests, they put them all together,” Badeaux said.
While drafting the proposal, Badeaux reached out to Nicholls’ I.T. department to get a breakdown of what is needed to fix connection issues. He said the costliest equipment came from new Wi-Fi access points and switches.
Although the project costs more than anticipated, Badeaux feels it is worth it if it fixes connectivity issues.
The Technology Fee Committee reportedly approved this project, ensuring tangible improvements sooner than later.
“The alternative was waiting until next year when Nicholls does their annual request to the legislature. I figured that if we did it this way, we could avoid having to wait a year,” Badeaux said. “If we start now, we set ourselves up for a better time frame to get it done.”
His proposal includes installing new Wi-Fi access points in all classrooms. With this, there will be fewer students pulling from one point, increasing speeds overall.
Badeaux said many rooms lack the necessary wiring infrastructure and unning new wiring will take months to complete.
Badeaux said approval for the proposal is a start, but student’s should know that results will not be immediate.
Badeaux has dealt with Wi-Fi problems throughout his college career and believes his proposal willsubstantially increase speed and connection for everyone at Nicholls.
He hopes students, faculty and staff see changes in the upcoming semesters.
