Finals week can be a stressful time for many students, but there are ways to relieve this stress.
Elnora Vicks, counselor and outreach coordinator at the Nicholls State University Counseling Center, gives tips on how to de-stress, stay motivated, and prepare for finals.
How to reduce stress
- Exercise
Take a walk or participate in meditation.
- Engage in Hobbies
Reading, writing, painting, etc.
- Reach out to family and friends
Talk to someone you trust
- Limit social media
Set social media aside during study time
- Manage your time
Set aside time for what you want to accomplish
How to stay motivated
- Practice Gratitude
Stay positive, write positive affirmations, limit negative inputs
- Practice Self-care
Do what you love and take care of your physical and mental
- Reward yourself
Treat yourself when you’ve accomplished a goal
- Focus on what is in your control
You can’t control everything, so focus on what you can
- Set Goals for yourself
Set realistic goals, long and short term for what you want to accomplish
- Give yourself grace
Be patient with yourself and pour into your self-compassion
How to prepare
- Eat Properly
Eat a proper meal at least three times a day
- Sleeping
Get eight or more hours of sleep
- Take Breaks
Take breaks in between your studies to avoid burnout
- Group Study
Instead of studying alone go with a friend or a group
- Prioritize
Figure out what order you should best complete assignments and be sure to keep track of the days each final is on
- Communicate with your professor
If anything is bothering you or something happens that prevents you from completing your final, be sure to communicate with your professor
“Take the time to focus on what’s in front of you,” Vicks said.
