Young Democrats of Louisiana appointed two members of the Nicholls Student Government Association to its executive board.
Lizeth Tobias serves as Executive Second Vice President and SGA president Jax Badeaux serves as Chief of Staff for the Young Democrats of Louisiana.
Tobias is President of the Latino Fraternity Alpha Psi Lambda and participates in the SGA and Badeaux serves as President of the SGA.
A privilege
Tobias said being selected to the executive board is “an amazing privilege” and sees it as an opportunity to shape the future of young leadership in Louisiana.
She sees her selection as an opportunity to inspire political engagement and to work with like-minded individuals.
“To me, it’s about amplifying the voices of young people, advocating for progressive change, and ensuring that the issues impacting our generation are addressed,” Tobias said.
For Badeaux, being on the executive board means he is a part of something much bigger than himself.
“Coming from the leadership side, it means a lot to have a team [of people] who are well informed, responsible, organized and have the best interest of the organization,” Badeaux said.
Starting over
Young Democrats of Louisiana was recently reestablished and Tobias started on the ground.
She had the opportunity to join the communications team as the organization began rebuilding.
She recounts, “It was inspiring to witness the organization restart from the ground up and grow so quickly in such a short period. After some initial involvement, we reached a stage where we could officially recruit members, marking a significant milestone in our development.”
Selection process
Badeaux says the selection process went pretty well for him. He saw an opening for executive board members, so he applied and sent in his resume.
He says it was a relatively quick process.
“They had a virtual interview where they asked me a bunch of questions, just about my leadership experience,” Badeaux said. “Waited about a day before I heard back from them. They told me that they thought I would be a great fit.”
Get involved
The mission of Young Democrats of Louisiana is to educate and empower young voters to become involved in the democratic process.
Badeaux mentioned that young people in Louisiana often fail to participate in local and state government.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a member of the Republican Party or another party. In Louisiana, we have a big issue with getting young people to participate in the process,” Badeaux said.
Tobias added that the organization is essential in the wake of the most recent presidential election. She believes it provides a platform for young voices to influence the political landscape at all levels of government.
“Being politically active is not just a responsibility, it’s a vital way to shape the future we all deserve,” Tobias said. “Through active involvement in pressing issues like state tax reforms, we aim to demonstrate how young people can have a direct and lasting impact on their communities.”
Badeaux wants students to be conscious of what is on the ballot and the laws being passed.
“Know that you have the right to vote on those things, representatives and constitutional amendments. It’s your civic duty and you should exercise it any way you can because some people don’t have that right.”
