If you grew up watching Disney Channel in the mid-2010s, you know Sabrina Carpenter from Girl Meets World, a spin-off of the hit 90s show Boy Meets World.
As many other child Disney Channel stars have, Carpenter used her name recognition to begin a music career.
Carpenter’s first album, Eyes Wide Open, was released a little over nine years ago in April 2015.
Carpenter released her most recent album, Short n’ Sweet in August and it is already shaping up to be her most successful release.
Short n’ Sweet has earned Carpenter six Grammy nominations, ironically including “Best New Artist”.
Along with her Best New Artist nomination, the album is up for Album of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Albums; individual songs have been nominated for awards as well.
Taste
It is a strong song to start the album that definitely left “quite an impression.”
Please Please Please
This song has been nominated for Song of the Year. I think the clear reason for this song to get Song of the Year is because it is stuck in everyone’s heads and it is so catchy.
Good Graces
This is my personal favorite. A perfect blast-in-the-car song. Although a typical pop song, Good Graces is essential to this album.
Sharpest Tool
Sabrina changes it up here bringing in a more acoustic feel.
Coincidence
This song is for every girl who has ever felt like her love interest has been acting strangely towards them.
Bed Chem
Carpenter lets her freak flag fly in this song displaying her playful personality with raunchy, yet creative lyrics.
Espresso
One of the catchiest songs on the albums. Espresso quickly became a #1 Billboard hit – after weeks of advertising ahead of its release – and was nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance and Record of the Year.
Dumb & Poetic
Sabrina slows it down with this ballad, a change from her normally upbeat music. It is easy to see how someone can find this song therapeutic. However, I dislike this song for its slow pace because.
Slim Pickins
This country-style song is unexpected but not out of place. The song is light and fun, bringing a stark yet needed contrast.
Juno
Outside of the reference to the movie “Juno”, this song is extremely catchy and has become an ear-worm.
Lie to Girls
Lie to Girls is yet another upbeat, sad song just like many others on this album. It is a good song, but I would not have listened to it if it was a stand-alone single.
Don’t Smile
This song reminds me a little bit of a Tame Impala song because of how slow it is. Again this is another one that is sad and not like Sabrina’s style, but I think this is the best one out of the slower songs.
This is another one of my favorite songs from this album, and I think it is a good closing compared to the strong start of Taste.
In review
This album is unskippable even if some of the songs travel into a genre you dislike, such as “Slim Pickins”. Still, with those songs, the album is worth the listen.
This album is full of big hits, earning Carpenter several Grammy nominations. Hopefully, she will be awarded quite a few Grammys, but even without a win, it is a testament to her talent.
