Leaders of the Colonel Media Group attended the Fall National College Media Convention hosted by the College Media Association and the Associated College Press in New Orleans.
The Colonel Media Group includes Nicholls State University’s four student media organizations: The Nicholls Worth, La Pirogue, KNSU – Radio and KNSU – TV.
At least one member of each Colonel Media Group organization attended the conference. The attendees included Brogan Burns, Shamarr Moses, Jaqueline Diaz, Clare Melvin, Anne-Morgan Simmons, Sydney Matherne, Lawrence-Michael Nelson and Jacob Levron.
The Fall National Media Convention is an event that is held each year in the fall semester. The convention gathers college journalists and student media advisers to exchange ideas.
According to the College Media Association website, the event offers an opportunity for college students and media enthusiasts to “network with industry professionals, learn from seasoned journalists, and gain valuable insights into the ever-evolving world of media and journalism.”
Sophomore Jaqueline Diaz, the editor-in-chief of the Nicholls Worth said that attending the conference was very
impactful.
“We attended all kinds of panels and student events to help attendees get to know each other and learn from each other’s ideas and unique experiences,” Diaz said. “Through talking to other student media groups and hearing them out, I feel like I can help improve the Nicholls Worth in many ways.”
Conference attendees found opportunities to gain or hone existing skills in instructional sessions with topics ranging from music, sports media, crime coverage and public relations.
Diaz says that going to a few of these helped her learn more professional skills.
Diaz said those skills included, “the importance of teamwork, communication, management strategies, networking skills and more.” She added that she is grateful for the opportunity to attend the conventions and hopes to attend the next one.
CMG employees said they came back with many ideas they will use to improve their media coverage skills in their organizations.
