Announcements
The SGA meeting started with an announcement segment from Nicholls’ President Dr.Jay Clune.
Inflation increased by 29% since the year 2019, according to President Clune. However, tuition has not increased. Across Louisiana, colleges plan to increase tuition fees by 10% over the next two years. Nicholls will be participating in this plan in hopes of achieving essential financial balance post-inflation.
President Clune spoke of the decrease in enrollment at Nicholls. He explained that enrollment is down this fall by 300 students, and the general population of seniors in high school has decreased within the southern parishes of Louisiana. Potential solutions to this issue are underway.
Concerns
Dr. Michelle Caruso addressed general concerns the senate had about AC issues across campus. Units are being replaced or fixed due to damage from Hurricane Ida and Francine.
A senator voiced unease about the color selected for the freshly painted colored step nosings outside of the Student Union. Dr. Caruso assured the senator that the color yellow complies with ADA requirements and that experts were consulted in the selection of the paint used.
Approvals
The senate passed seven motions at this week’s meeting and tabled three. Among the passed motions was a motion to purchase six tickets for the Bistro Ruth. Two of the tickets each will be distributed to the Alive @ 5 event, winners of the pirogue race, and the homecoming king and queen.
Another motion the senate passed was to purchase blinds for Talbot room 106. The temporary solutions for preventing the sun from entering the room are unsuccessful. The funding for these blinds will be pulled from campus improvements.
Appointments
The senate appointed Ryann Dorsey as senator for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:07 p.m.
