The Nicholls defense posted a near shutout against Southern University with a 51-7 victory over the Jaguars on Saturday, Oct. 5, two weeks after shutting out Mississippi Valley State University, another SWAC opponent, 66-0.
The team’s ten takeaways in the last two games is a testament to his players’ defensive preparation and effort, Head Coach Tim Rebowe said.
“The defense has been working hard and preparing all week. They want those shutouts and turnovers because they know what it does. I’m proud of the effort they’ve been giving,” Rebowe said.
Coastal Carolina transfer, defensive back Lawrence Sullivan Jr, took in both of the Colonels’ interceptions against Southern. Sullivan Jr pulled in his first interception with 9:42 remaining in the second quarter and his second seven minutes later.
“We have a killer mentality, we always try to get the ball and give our offense the chance to play comfortably,” Sullivan Jr, said.
Nicholls’ offense showed out as well, tallying 7 touchdowns, four through the air and three on the ground.
Running back Collin Guggenheim led the way for the Colonels on offense with 99 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on 16 carries.
Wide receiver Christian McNees finished a close second, totaling 96 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns on three catches.
Guggenheim gave credit to his offensive line for allowing him to have his performance on Saturday.
“It’s a testament to those guys upfront, without them I’m not successful and I can’t be who I am,” Guggenheim said. “Having guys like Evan Rousell and Hamza [Rahman], our right tackle in his second career start, play physically for us allows me to play my game.”
