Nicholls State University issues a school closure ahead of Tropical Storm Francine’s arrival.
Francine, a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, has developed over the past few hours and is expected to make landfall along the Louisiana coast on Wednesday as a Category 2 hurricane.
In preparation for Francine, Nicholls announced it is closing Wednesday, Sept. 11 through Thursday, Sept. 12.
Jerad David, Nicholls’ director of communications, sent an email to students, faculty and staff with further information regarding the university’s plans for the storm.
“With the impacts of Tropical Storm Francine expected to reach our area as early as Wednesday morning, Nicholls State University will be closed on Wednesday, Sept. 11 and Thursday, Sept. 12. All classes scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday and all other campus events are canceled,” said David. “Campus will reopen on Friday, Sept. 13, with Friday classes offered remotely.”
WDSU reported, “Hurricane Warnings have been issued farther west of [New Orleans], but Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes are under a Hurricane Watch.”
David said Nicholls continues to monitor the storm’s progress and will notify about further changes to the forecast.
