The Southland Conference named two Nicholls State University women’s basketball players as recipients of yearly awards.
Freshman guard Britiya Curtis won the Freshman of the Year award, and sophomore guard Lexi Alexander was named to the all-conference second team.
Curtis is the fourth Colonel to win the Freshman of the Year award, joining Heidi Broussard [‘99], KK Babin [‘11] and last year’s winner, Lexi Alexander.
Curtis, a native of Calhoun, Georgia, was recruited by Nicholls Head Coach Justin Payne at Georgia Southwestern.
Curtis followed Payne to Nicholls, where she found instant success, playing all 30 games and starting 25 of those games.
Curtis scored a total of 323 points and averaged 10.3 points and 3.1 points per game. She recorded 49 assists and steals, as well as three blocks.
Curtis said that she is blessed to receive this accolade.
“It’s something exciting,” Curtis said.
Alexander played in and started all 30 games, scoring 416 total points, averaging 13.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. She also recorded 65 assists, 36 steals, and 18 blocks this season.
Alexander said she is proud of herself and thankful for her team after adding another accolade to her resume.
Alexander said she is also proud of Curtis for winning the Freshman of the Year award, one year after Alexander herself won that award.
“I feel like a big sister right now passing the title down,” Alexander said.
