A $25,000 donation will provide funds to the Hugh John Plaisance Excellence Award.
The award is in memory of Hugh John Plaisance, a Nicholls State University English major and former Nicholls Worth editor. This newly founded scholarship, created by friends of Hugh Plaisance, is for full-time Nicholls students involved in student media programs.
A committee will choose the recipients of the scholarship. The group will adhere to the guidelines provided by Hugh John Plaisance’s friends and Nicholls.
Some members of the Mary and Al Danos Family Foundation are family friends of Hugh Plaisance. They witnessed the creation of the scholarship. The foundation then decided to donate 25 thousand dollars. These funds will aid qualifying students in furthering their college careers.
Owen Plaisance is Hugh Plaisance’s brother and a sophomore studying public policy and pre-law at the University of Mississippi. He said the award not only commemorates his brother’s memory but also gives appreciation to those interested in pursuing careers and hobbies that he valued.
Plaisance stated that student media is often not noticed and hopes that this scholarship will draw people toward the department and lift up people already in it. He believes that it will leave an impact on the Nicholls community as a whole.
“I appreciate everything that is coming from this award and the people who set it up. I really hope that this award will forever serve as a commemoration for my brother’s impact and the impact he had on not only the media department but also on Nicholls and Thibodaux as a whole,” said Plaisance.
