Nicholls State University has the Department of Housing perform health and safety checks every semester to ensure that student residents are getting the most out of their living experience on campus.
Alex Coad, the Director of Residential Living, outlines the process: “RAs will inspect residential student living areas for cleanliness, safety, and prohibited items. To pass their Health & Safety check, residents should carefully review the email that outlines the specific items RAs will be looking for.”
The email Coad referred was sent out to all student residents at least a week before health and safety checks have been performed. It includes a list to remind students about prohibited items such as candles and tobacco, and emphasizes the importance of keeping a clean dorm. Students are encouraged to refer to the Office of Residential Living Handbook for a complete list of prohibited items.
Hannah Robert is a student resident who lives in the Brady apartment complex. She says that keeping dorms clean and under code is beneficial not only for health checks but for the wellbeing of her roommates.
“We make sure for the RA’s and each other that we keep the dorm clean and nice,” Robert said.
Cat Bertholf, Hannah’s roommate, agreed. She stressed the need to keep the kitchen area clear of dirty dishes and to take out the trash regularly.
She also suggested that residents should “have a conversation with [their] roommates about each taking a task to do the week before health and safety checks so that everything is in order.”
Students should keep in mind that keeping a dorm clean and free of prohibited items is important not only for passing health and safety checks but for keeping a comfortable and safe living situation.
