The Young Democratic Socialist Association [YDSA] is a youth branch of the Democratic Socialist Party of America. Founded in 1982, YDSA has reached campuses across the nation. It arrived on the campus of Nicholls State University in the fall 2022 semester. However, the Nicholls chapter has been on hiatus for a while. Now, in the fall of 2023, YDSA is returning to Nicholls campus.
Jenna Beth Beber, YDSA publicist, said, “YDSA originally went on hiatus due to your typical scheduling conflicts and cycling of leadership. YDSA is coming back because activism is something we are truly passionate about, and we just could not allow this organization to fizzle out.”
Beber explains how it is crucial for YDSA to have a presence on campus because she believes the student community should have a safe place to collaborate on improving campus.
According to Beber, YDSA is working towards getting themselves out there and becoming well-known.
“YDSA is planning to establish a presence on campus this semester. We want to let the student body know that we are here to bring lesser-known issues on campus to light and help solve these issues. We are currently looking for two members who are as passionate as we are to serve as our Secretary and Treasurer,” says Beber.
Upcoming events that YDSA organized is their Banned Book Giveaway on Oct. 3,, 2023. Formerly banned books, such as Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird”, will be given out for free in front of Ellender Memorial Library.
Anyone interested in joining Nicholls’ YDSA chapter can fill out a membership form located in the YDSA Instagram bio @nichollsydsa. YDSA meetings are held on Thursdays at 5 p.m. in Room 4 of the Bollinger Student Union.
