Walker Scobell named next Percy Jackson

Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series has finally found their Percy Jackson. Walker Scobell has been announced to play the titular character. Author Rick Riordan and his team of casting directors have been on the search for their main trio: Percy, Annabeth, and Grover. The first season is said to revolve around the first book in the series, “The Lightning Thief.” In the book, Percy finds himself in a world of Greek gods, accused of a crime he did not commit, and must embark on a journey to clear his name and save his mother from Hades.

Scobell was announced to be Percy on Apr. 11 after months of finalizing contracts and schedules. Scobell is a long-time fan of the series, and was even wearing a Camp Half-Blood shirt when he found out the news.

Scobell is best-known for his role as young Adam Reed in “The Adam Project,” starring alongside Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds himself congratulated Scobell on the announcement, along with many other cast members from the film. Scobell brought much humor and charisma into “The Adam Project,” so it is clear that he is the perfect person to play Percy Jackson.

There is currently no news on the casting of Annabeth or Grover just yet, which is good. Each young actor should have their own time in the spotlight and celebrated separately until we see them on the screen together. Filming is expected to start in the beginning of June.

With Riordan having a larger role in the production of the series rather than the two previous films, the series is bound to be a love letter to both longtime and newer fans of the book series. Fans seem to be extremely pleased with this casting as they have taken their praise onto social media. This series premiere cannot come fast enough.
