“West Side Story” Review
In Dec. 2021, Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” was released on Disney+. The story of “West Side Story” has been around for years, and it is one that I personally enjoy, therefore, my expectations for the film were high.
The film takes place in the 1950’s where two gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, fight for control of the streets of Manhattan.
In my opinion, this film had many strong suits that made it so great. The cast, the music and the choreography all very much impressed me in this film.
Ansel Elgort was cast as Tony. I have seen his work before in the film, “The Fault in Our Stars,” and thought he did a wonderful job in his role. However, in this previous role, his character did not sing or dance, so I was excited to see his other talents being shown. Although I did not know what to expect from him, his and Rachel Zegler’s voices harmonized so well together.
Rachel Zegler made her film debut in this film as Maria, and I thought she did an outstanding job in her role. Zegler impressed me the most with her amazing vocal range. Many of the songs throughout this film reminded me of opera songs, because they tell the story through music and long, high-pitched singing. Zegler did an incredible job with her singing throughout the film; she hit every note perfectly and made it look so effortless.
Another thing that looked effortless throughout the film, and really stuck out to me, was the choreography. Within the first number performed in this film, I was impressed. Every dance move was sharp, yet effortless. The 1950’s wardrobe only added to the magic of it all. The women’s swing dresses spun with each move they made. Every musical number in this film was done perfectly.
This film not only met my expectations, but it exceeded them.
