Why movie reviews are irrelevant
Reviews are often used as a sort of guide or an advisory to watching movies. However, more often than not, they are usually taken as an absolute ruling. While reviews can be helpful at times, they should not be taken as objective facts, as they are opinionated, after all.
This has always been an issue with reviews, but it has gotten more attention due to the recent screenings of Marvel’s “Eternals” and its current Rotten Tomatoes score. At the time of writing this, “Eternals” has a Rotten score of 53%. This is the lowest score of the franchise, with the highest score belonging to 2018’s “Black Panther” with a 96%.
There has always been a divide between critics’ and audiences’ receptions of movies. Some films are praised by critics, but not audiences, while there are other films that are praised by audiences, but not critics. Two such examples of this are “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” and “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”.
“Home Alone 2” was given a 34% on Rotten Tomatoes by critics, but one could argue that the film is arguably one of the greatest Christmas films of all time, and it was given a 61% by audiences. That is a pretty large divide. Whereas 2018’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” was praised by critics and currently sits as one of the highest rated “Star Wars” films ever with a 91% score. However, fans were a bit more mixed on the film, resulting in a 42% audience score.
Needless to say, there is a great divide when it comes to critics’ and audiences’ opinions. However, that should not deter fans and moviegoers away from the theaters. I truly believe there is something enjoyable in every film. There are plenty of films that I love that many of my peers or colleagues do not like and vice versa.
If a trailer or movie premise interests you, even in the slightest, go see it for yourself. I cannot stress that enough. Watch it and form your own opinion on it. You may actually love a film that many people hate, but that is okay. If you are passionate about something, whether it is one way or another, that is ultimately what matters. The experience of it all is definitely worth it.
