“Cinderella” a magically empowering twist on the classic fairytale

The classic fairytale of Cinderella has been told countless times in so many ways, but Director Kay Cannon may have found the perfect twist.

The age-old tale is still centered around an orphan yearning for something more when she is left behind with her evil stepmother. This time, however, she longs to be a businesswoman instead of finding true love and marrying the prince.

Cannon is known for having a great taste in music, in fact, she even directed the Pitch Perfect movies. In this musical, she brings back remarkable oldies, such as: Queen’s Somebody to love, a remix of Jeanette Jackson’s Rhythm Nation, Madonna’s Material Girl, Earth’s Shining Star and Jennifer Lopez’s Let’s Get Loud.

The cast includes extraordinary performances from Latin singer-songwriter Camilla Cabello as Cinderella, Pierce Brosnan as King Rowan, Idina Menzel as the Stepmother Vivian, Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Robert, and Billy Porter as the Fairy Godmother. British comedians James Corden, James Acaster, and Romesh Ranganathan voice Cinderella’s three iconic mice friends and bring their funny twist to the film.

Finally, the film takes feminine empowerment to a whole new level when Cinderella turns the prince down to follow her dreams. Vivian, the stepmother, also reveals that she once had a dream that she was forced to give up when she became married in order to fit into the role of a housewife.

The movie has been mostly well-received by the public with a 64% audience score. However, critics have not been so loving of the film, as they have given it a 43% on the tomato meter. The biggest critiques by the critics are that it lacks an easy-flowing dialogue, and the dialogue-musical transitions are not as smooth as they could have been. Also, the dialogue throughout the movie is a little flat.

“Cinderella’s music is enjoyable, but it’s hollow, the performances flat, and the dialogue often cringe-worthy,” Screen Rant published.

The movie is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Let us know what you think about the latest Cinderella story.
