*UPDATED* Nicholls has announced a new opponent for the 2021 spring schedule, the Lincoln University of Missouri Blue Tigers. The Tigers will take on the Colonels on Feb. 19 at 6 P.M. in Thibodaux.

On Tuesday the Southland Conference announced its plans to resume football in the 2021 spring semester.

Opposed to a fall’s  usual 11 game regular season, the Colonels will play a six-game spring schedule composed exclusively of Southland Conference opponents.

With Southland teams like Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas, Houston Baptist and Stephen F. Austin opting to play exclusively in the fall, the league will consist of the remaining seven teams in the spring:  UIW, Lamar, McNeese, Nicholls, Northwestern State, Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana.

The six games will be played over an eight-week period to provide flexibility if schedule changes need to be made.

The Southland Conference champion will per usual receive an automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs, which will feature a reduced bracket from 24 to 16 teams.

The Colonels will kick off the season on Feb. 27, and finish regular season play on April 10.
