Mosaic, the official literary magazine of Nicholls State University, is now accepting submissions for their 2020 issue.

Mosaic is a student-run, student-edited collection of creative literature and art created and submitted by current Nicholls students.

Content accepted in the magazine includes fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, drama, novel excerpts, freshman essays, artwork, graphic design, photography and sculpture.

Dr. Katherine Conner, the faculty advisor of Mosaic, says all types of writing and artwork are considered, as long as they have creative elements.

Any fee-paying student attending Nicholls State University is able to submit pieces to the magazine.

Conner highly encourages students to submit their works. She says it gives students a sense of ownership and pride seeing their own writing or artwork published.

After pieces are submitted to the Mosaic, the editorial board determines which pieces will be selected for the magazine. The submissions are edited by the board to ensure the best quality before publishing.

The students who make up the editorial board are students taking either English 432 or 433. Those are the publishing practicum classes offered at Nicholls.

In the fall semester, students take English 432. In this class, students go through a blind review process. During this process, students read and rank submitted pieces to determine which ones will be in the next issue of the magazine.

In the spring semester, students take English 433. The students in this class edit the pieces that were selected to be in the magazine that year. Many students will edit one writing and then compare and discuss edited versions to make sure the one selected is true to its original form.

The students who have work accepted into the magazine are able to attend an early release party. At this party, they can meet other students whose work was also published in the magazine. There are also cash prizes awarded to the highest-ranking submissions.

“It’s a really good way to get your work out there; it’s also a nice way to make memories,” Rachel Vanderbrook, co-editor, said.

Vanderbrook said the final version of the magazine is published around April each year. The deadline to submit for the 2020 issue of Mosaic is Oct. 15. Submissions can be uploaded on the website nicholls.edu/mosaic or can be sent through email to [email protected].
