Nicholls State University is hosting a “monstrous” spring book drive to promote children’s literacy with donation boxes all around campus.

This year’s book drive theme is “Little Monsters,” and it is a cooperative effort between the Nicholls chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and the Nicholls Honors Program.

All donations made go to the Lafourche Parish Library.

“For me, this book drive is an amazing experience. I’ve had so much fun, I’ve met some really lovely people and I’m so happy that I got to be a part of it,” Celia Andresen, an interdisciplinary studies graduating senior from Baton Rouge, said.

Bridget Scott, associate dean of Arts and Sciences, said the national chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and the University Honors Program involved in this book drive are two groups of students who are interested in academics.

“They are encouraging the love of learning. So, that’s why they work so well together,” Scott said.

Scott said the two groups of students have been promoting and advertising the book drive by setting up little monster boxes around campus for students to donate their books.

The books can be new or used, and donations can also be brought to Gouaux Hall in room 107.

Students can find the monster boxes in Gouaux Hall, Peltier Hall, Elkins room 251 and the bookstore.

“We want to help promote childhood literacy in the Lafourche area. At Phi Kappa Phi, our motto is ‘to let the love of learning rule humanity,’ and we think that one of the best ways to start that is to promote a love of reading. We really hope this will helps kids throughout their life,” Andresen said.

Andresen and Scott said that reading to children is one of the most effective ways to help them learn.

The book drive began on March 25 and will end on April 11.

Once the book drive is over, Scott said they will deliver the donated books to the library for kids to start reading.
