Students spend their first week of school coping with the end of their break. Returning to class can be a drag so there are plenty of activities to partake in during the first week back on campus. From giveaways to college night, here are five things to do during the first week of school.

  1.    Welcome Back School Supply Giveaway

As a big welcome back, free school supplies will be available from 11 a.m. to noon on Tuesday in the Bollinger Memorial Student Union lobby, along with free popcorn.

The student union always has a revolving door of giveaways put on by various clubs. While the frequency ebbs and flows, the first week of school has many going on at once. Most deal with food, but this giveaway is for school supplies.

Free food is awesome but saving money on school supplies is divine. It frees up money for important things like Taco Bell and Netflix.

  1.    National Compliment Day Table

In honor of National Compliment Day, the ladies of Delta Zeta are scheduled to have a table from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday in the student union lobby for students to stop by.

If a self-esteem boost is needed, this is the table for you. It also is a testament to the myriad days dedicated to seemingly normal things. Want some extra fun? Turn the tables and complement those running this event.

  1.    Café Du Nicholls Giveaway

The Student Programming Association will be hosting its Café Du Nicholls Giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday in the student union lobby.

The SPA is giving away coffee, hot chocolate and beignets for Student Appreciation Week. Take advantage of free breakfast as your bank account cries due to the many textbooks that are soon to be purchased.

  1.    Waffle and Karaoke Night

The student union will be hosting its annual Waffle and Karaoke Night from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Wednesday in the Lafitte Room.

Waffles are awesome; some would say they are better than pancakes. While they usually come with a side of bacon, eggs and hash browns, these will be served with a side of singing. It is the night to take one’s shower-exclusive performance into the real world.

  1.    College Night, Downtown Thibodaux

Thursday nights are college nights in Downtown Thibodaux. Thursday nights mean the bars are usually pretty busy, and with your Colonel Card, entry into Last Call is free for students.  It is a perfect way to blow off some steam and meet people during the first week of school.

Bonus: Vagina Monologues Tryouts and Interest Meeting

The Vagina Monologues was initially written by Eve Ensler in 1996. It is an episodic performance that explores many issues women face. Since its inception in New York, variations of the original have been produced all over the United States. These iterations feature local talent and open discourse on women’s issues in the areas they are performed.

The one on campus is no different. The event is for tryouts and interest in the program.  The meeting takes place on Jan. 28 from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the La Bijou Theater located in the student union.

Whether you want to take part, want to help promote the event or are just curious, it’s a campus event to check out.
