The Nicholls State University golf team teed off on the last tournament of their 2017-18 season in the annual Southland Conference Men’s Golf Championship tournament. The tournament field consisted of 11 Southland Conference teams and included in-state rivals such as Southeastern Louisiana University and the University of New Orleans. The tournament, which took place in McKinney, Texas, at the Stonebridge Ranch Golf Club, spanned three days. Par was set at 288 for each round.
The Colonels came out of the gates swinging in the first round, ending day one placed fourth out of the 11 teams. The Colonels shot a 309 as a team, putting them 20 points behind first-placed Sam Houston State University, who had a score of 289. Junior Jack Lee led the Colonels on day one with a team-low score of 75. Senior Albert Badosa-Soler also performed well, posting a 76 on day one.
Day two of the tournament did not go as smooth for the Colonels, with the team finding itself in eighth place at the end of the day. Badosa-Soler followed up his day one performance with another good outing, posting a score of 74.
Day three was defined by bad weather conditions, and the Colonels dropped a spot to finish the tournament in ninth place overall. Freshman Connor Campbell led the team with a score of 78 on the day. Nicholls finished with an overall score of 948 for the tournament, coming one point shy of eighth place, which was held by Southeastern Louisiana with 947 points. Badosa-Soler led the Colonels in the tournament with a score of 231.
The Southland Conference Championship marked the last time on the greens for two Nicholls golf players. Seniors Chad Wyatt-Denyes and Albert Badosa-Soler, who both contributed heavily to the team throughout their years at the university, will both move on after this season.
