The Nicholls State University women’s basketball team started its season off splitting its first
two games with one loss and one win.

The Colonels (1-1) began their season last Friday against the Southern Methodist Mustangs at
Moody Coliseum. Nicholls led SMU for most of the first three quarters, but SMU narrowly won
by a score of 68-61.

Some highlights of the game included junior guard Cassidy Barrios’s 18 points and career-high
16 rebounds, which earned her Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week
honors. Sophomore guard Tykeria Williams scored 17 points, and senior guard Tia Charles
added 11.

Despite the individual accolades, Nicholls only made 27 percent of their field goal attempts, and
18 percent of their 3-point shots.

After the opening day loss, the Colonels returned home Tuesday to face the Spring Hill Badgers
at David R. Stopher Gymnasium. Nicholls held on to defeat Spring Hill 78-70 and win its home
opener.

Redshirt freshman forward Paige Williams led the Colonels with 17 points and senior guard Tia
Charles added 12. Freshman guards Kinzie Heineman and Destiny Collins had 11 points and 10
points. Junior guard Cassidy Barrios had her second double-double of the season with 10 points
and 12 rebounds.

Against the Badgers, the Colonels improved on their 3-point shooting by making half of their 14
attempts. They also connected on 45 percent of their field goal attempts.

The Colonels take on the Jacksonville Dolphins tomorrow at 1 p.m. at David R. Stopher
Gymnasium, followed by the LSU Tigers Nov. 21 in Baton Rouge.
