Colonel football win on the road, returns to play at home this weekend

October 30, 2017

The Nicholls State University football team secured their fourth straight win this weekend as they
defeated the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals 38-41.

This win proved to be a significant one for the Colonels as it secured their first winning season since
2007. The Colonels are now 6-2 overall with a 5-1 Southland Conference mark.

Nicholls took the lead early, scoring on their first offensive drive on a 68-yard pass to junior wide
receiver Mason Roberts. The Colonels scored twice more before the half, giving them a 31-14 advantage
at the break.

The lone Colonel touchdown of the second half was scored by freshman wide receiver, Dai'Jean Dixon,
for his second touchdown on the night.

Sophomore linebacker Layron James was the third Colonel to score a touchdown on an interception this
season. James’ interception happened with only one minute remaining in the game and he ran 57 yards
to score.

The Cardinals found the end zone twice in the second quarter and then twice in the fourth quarter of
the game. Their last touchdown was scored with only 45 seconds remaining in the game. After an
attempted onside kick, Roberts took hold of the football after it took a bounce to close out the game
and ensure the Colonel win.

Quarterback Chase Fourcade reached his second 300-yard game in his career after 18 completions. The
sophomore was ranked eighth in the FCS coming into this game with 15.1 yards per completion.
Defensively, junior Corey Abraham led the Colonels with 11 tackles. Senior Marcel Andry recorded a
sack-fumble.

On the offense, Dixon had four receptions for 100 yards receiving and Roberts had three grabs for 106
yards total. Damion Jeanpiere added four catches for 89 yards.

The Colonels have three games left in their 2017 season with their next opponent in the Houston Baptist
University Huskies. They will play this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in John L. Guidry Stadium.
