Volleyball defeats Lamar, faces McNeese State Saturday

Daniel Benitez, Sports Writer

The Nicholls State University volleyball team won its first match since Oct. 6 with a victory
against Lamar University last Thursday night. The Colonels defeated the Cardinals in four sets
with scores of 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 26-24. On Saturday, the Colonels lost to the Stephen F.
Austin Lumberjacks in three sets with scores of 25-13, 25-19 and 25-13.
Head coach Tommy Harold said he appreciated his team’s determination to win against Lamar.
“[We] went in and took care of business against Lamar in a couple of close sets,” Harold said. “It
was a nice battle, and the girls kept fighting and were able to squeak out a win.”
Harold said he wanted his team to have a better performance against Stephen F. Austin.
“[I] would’ve loved to have seen us play a little stronger on Saturday, but credit to Stephen F.
Austin, they’re a good team. They’re one of the top teams in the conference and they’re up there
for a reason. It’s where we aspire to be and where we’re working to be, but we’re not there yet.”
Nicholls plays McNesse State at Stopher Gymnasium Saturday at 1:00 p.m., their second
matchup of the year.
In their previous matchup with the Cowboys Sept. 19, the Colonels lost at Lake Charles in three
sets with scores of 25-16, 25-17 and 25-12. The Cowboys (15-11, 6-5 SLC) are sixth in the
Southland Conference standings, while the Colonels (4-20, 2-9 SLC) are 11 th .
Looking at the Cowboys, Harold said they run a different offensive system from other teams they
have faced, but it is one scheme that they have seen before.
“McNeese runs a different offensive system. They’re running high in the middle and quick to the
outsides. They’ve got a girl [who is] 6 feet, 5 inches in the middle. They present some different
style of play than we see from a lot of people, but we’ve seen it before. This is our second match
against them, so I think the girls know what to expect.”
