SAAC aids in Harvey relief

October 18, 2017

Nicholls’ Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently donated relief items to Hurricane Harvey victims.

When Nicholls athletes heard of the massive destruction from Hurricane Harvey, they decided to collect items within the athletic department. SAAC collected personal items such as clothing, soap and feminine hygiene products and brought all non-perishable items to Barker Hall.

Al Wilson, mass communication junior from Baton Rouge, said that athletes “always help each other out” and explained that it is important for athletes to give back to their local communities because of all the support that teams receive throughout the year.

The items collected filled up the bottom of one bus. The Nicholls volleyball team took the bus with the items and donated them after a volleyball practice while they were on the road. Wilson said that they did not want a lot of attention but preferred it to be a very humbling experience.

After the volleyball team delivered the hurricane relief items, Katy Seabolt was in charge of distribution of the items in her area.

SAAC is made up of members of all the sports teams on Nicholls’ campus. Each team has one representative that holds a position on the committee. There are a total of five cabinet members.
