Colonel soccer captures second Conference win

While Friday’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Houston Baptist University was not what the Colonels had hoped for, they were able to rebound and even the weekend series with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi on Sunday. This weekend’s results place Nicholls at 5-7 overall on the season and 2-3 in Southland Conference play.

Nicholls currently sits at seventh overall in Southland Conference standings with a total of six conference points.

While the final score of Friday’s match against Houston Baptist may not reflect it, the Colonels played a tight first half against the Huskies. The teams went into halftime scoreless before Houston Baptist pulled away in the second half. The Huskies scored their first goal in the 47th minute then added another one six minutes later, as well as goals in the 83rd and 89th minutes to make the score 4-0.

The Colonels were outshot by a wide margin on the night, only taking four compared to 26 by Houston Baptist. Houston Baptist also managed to put 12 shots on goal compared to only one by Nicholls. Goalkeeper Taylor Benoit recorded eight saves throughout the game.

Sunday’s match versus Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had a positive end result for the Colonels. In this tightly contested matchup, Nicholls struck first on a goal by forward Kristy Helmers in the 20th minute. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi matched the Colonels with a goal of their own in the 35th minute, evening the score to 1-1 at halftime. Both teams remained scoreless for the entire second half and the game went into sudden-death overtime, where midfielder Haylee Atwell found the back of the net to end the game with a 98th minute golden-goal.

In the game, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi outshot Nicholls 15 to seven on shots and seven to four on shots on goal. Goalkeeper Taylor Benoit recorded five saves before she was subbed out and replaced by Roosa Hurmerinta in the 83rd minute. Hurmerinta recorded one save.

Nicholls will return home next week to face off against Southland Conference and in-state foe McNeese State University on Friday at 4 p.m.
