Colonel pride needs to be shown every Saturday

September 15, 2016

We’ve all heard this headline, “Nicholls State almost upsets No. 9 Georgia,” but almost is not the point. The point is that Nicholls State University competed with a nationally ranked Southeastern Conference team, and did what no one thought they could do in front of a nationally televised audience as well as 92,746 people in Athens.

As the game was happening, Nicholls was making national news and becoming one of the favorites to win the Southland Conference, and now could be a contender in the FCS playoffs. Nicholls received a lot of recognition from the media, including on WWE’s “Backlash.” Even college football analysts around the country had a hard time believing that a “little school” like Nicholls almost beat the University of Georgia. They expressed how bad the Nicholls’ football program was according to the win and loss record from one year ago (3-8). Nicholls dominated the line of scrimmage and only allowed Heisman Trophy hopeful runningback Nick Chubb 80 yards on 20 carries and one touchdown. The Colonels were in comparison to FCS school Jacksonville State University who nearly beat Auburn University just a year ago. When Georgia scheduled to play Nicholls, they didn’t plan on giving the program money so easily, because it was apparent the Georgia Bulldogs were not ready for the Nicholls Colonels.

After all this recognition and buzz, there is no reason for Nicholls to be just a dot on the map anymore. Although, it would be sad if people around the country say they never heard of us since we host the prestigious Manning Passing Academy every summer.

When the Nicholls football team got home Saturday night, 100-150 fans were there to greet and congratulate them on their outstanding effort. Rightly so, the Nicholls football team did something that no one expected them to do because they were a 55 point underdog. Only losing 26-24 on the road and in a hostile environment is quite an accomplishment, no matter the win and loss column.

The Colonels have their first home game of the season this weekend against the University of The Incarnate Word, which is more important than last week’s game. It is the opening of Southland Conference play, and a very winnable game for the Colonels. The Cardinal’s hopes are high as they beat Northwestern State University last week to open their conference schedule.

With all the excitement, it is important to continue that support through the Nicholls community. Showing your Colonel pride every Saturday will help increase the team’s confidence in their success. A team is nothing without their fan base, and not showing up to football games shows the lack of support you have in your team. It might just be a special year for the Nicholls Community and our football team. If we all show our Colonel pride this weekend, the Colonels just might have their best season yet.
