Degree vs. Desires: Enjoying hobbies while in school

Students at Nicholls State University know how stressful and consuming every aspect of college can be. Whether it is finding a parking spot on campus so you are not late to class, or getting your essay turned in to Moodle on time, there is always something to keep students on the go every day. Every student should realize, however, that it is just as important to take time out of school to relax and unwind every once in a while to keep your sanity.

Hobbies

Whether it is running, reading a book or laying out by the pool, find time to do something that takes your mind off of school for a little while. It is important to relax your mind and body from all of the studying college students do every day. Take time to focus on your mental health and your grades will improve as well. Giving yourself a chance to not think about what is going on in your classes allows you to stay balanced because school takes up a large portion of students’ time.

Plan Ahead

Planning your days out and penciling in time for yourself will release the stress of homework and tests for a little while. Every student thinks that cramming for a test by staying up all night studying will help them get better grades, but if you do not take time to sleep, eat and relax, all of that information you study will go out of the window as you tiredly stare at the questions on your exam. Keep in mind that by planning out your day, you can set time aside to be productive while studying, as well as take breaks to go outside or eat some good brain food that will ultimately help you feel more energized and rested throughout the day.

Staying Organized and on Schedule

If you know you have that 7:30 a.m. class, do not stay up all night trying to get schoolwork done because you already have yourself set up for failure the next day. Upon receiving your assignment or date of your exam, stay organized so you are not doing things last minute. Separate your school work into class blocks and set a time or day to get them accomplished so you never fall behind.

Being Healthy

One of the biggest mistake college students make is not getting the right nutrients into their diet. A lot of students rely on caffeine to get them through the day, but it only makes you more tired in the long run. Keeping your body hydrated, along with eating fruits and vegetables, will ultimately give you more energy that lasts longer than any cup of coffee. So put the sodas, energy drinks and sometimes even coffee down and pick up a bottle of water to feel more awake and alert in your classes and while you study.

Because college is so stressful, remember to take time for yourself, drink plenty of water, get on a set schedule, write down and plan out your days and have some fun every once in a while. Students need time to do absolutely nothing for the sake of their sanity. So do not consume and overwhelm yourself with school work every day, all day. Take time to do the things you love.
