Nicholls’ Greek community looks forward to Greek Week 2016
For one week of the year, sororities and fraternities at Nicholls State University come together and celebrate the spirit of being a Greek member and demonstrate their passion for scholarship, service, leadership and brotherhood/sisterhood.
Senior Ian Shows, public relations major from Houma, believes the whole point of Greek week is to bring the entire Greek community together at Nicholls State University for a week full of competition, camaraderie and service. Another goal of Greek week is to show the school and community that sororities and fraternities do a lot more than just party.
“My main goal for the week is to give the Greek community a week that is full of fun and exciting things that they look forward to year after year,” Shows said.
This year, the penny wars will start on Monday, March 14 and will come to a close that Friday. The money raised at the end of the week will go towards two scholarships for incoming freshmen, as well as the charity Relay for Life. Also, a can drive will be going on from March 14 until Wednesday at 2 p.m. and all cans will go to the local food bank. To kick off the week, on Saturday, March 12 the Bayou Side Clean Up will be taking place from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. On Sunday, taking place at the tailgate area by the football field, will be “Movie Night,” which begins at 7:30 p.m.
“Movie night is my favorite event of the week because I had this idea last year and it turned out to be pretty fun,” Shows said. “Its a great way to start the weeks’ festivities with having a non competitive event and relax and get to hang out with other Greeks.”
Olympic type games such as tug-of-war and relay races will be happening at the Rec Center, indoor games such as Kleenex box shaking will be taking place in the Union and tailgating for the baseball game will happen at Ray E. Didier Field before Nicholls takes on Tulane University.
On Thursday, March 17, Songfest 2016 will take place in Peltier Auditorium at 7 p.m. Songfest puts the sororities and fraternities to test as they perform different numbers to make the audience laugh. Victoria Rambo, junior sociology major from Baton Rogue, says that her favorite part about Greek Week is killing it during Songfest 2016 as well as gaining a sense of pride from each of the sororities and fraternities.
“Even though it’s very competitive, you can’t help but be proud of each of the Greek organizations for coming together and cheering each other on,” Rambo said.
Junior, Macy Richard, dietetics major from League City, Texas, believes that Greek week gives the Greek community a chance to break the stigma of sorority and fraternity life and allows everyone to exhibit their talents whether it be singing or dancing and is also a time for each chapter to find their hidden talents.
“It really brings the Greek community together as a whole while participating in games, events, and other activities.” Richard said.
