Colonels in action all weekend
The spring athletic calendar is in full swing this weekend, as six Colonel teams will compete.
Fresh off their 70-55 victory against the University of New Orleans inside Stopher Gym this past Wednesday, the Nicholls women’s basketball team will hit travel to Lake Charles in hopes to double up the McNeese State University cowgirls this season. The Colonels won their previous matchup by four points in Thibodaux earlier this month, and currently sit at 6th in the Southland Conference with three games remaining and a trip to a fifth consecutive appearance in the SLC tournament secured .
The men’s basketball squad will also take on McNeese, looking to snap a three game losing streak. Four games remain for head coach J.P. Piper’s team that enters the last four games of a dismal 2015-16 schedule at 7-21 overall and 3-11 in SLC play. The Colonels enjoyed their second win in conference against the Cowboys on Feb. 6 at home.
The baseball team will travel to their second Southeastern Conference venue in the same week, as the Dirty Red travel to Starksville, Miss. for a four game weekend. Nicholls will take on the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Friday, then Mississippi State University on Saturday before playing a double-header against the two on Sunday. The Colonels suffered their first defeat of the season this week at the University of Alabama and will host Louisiana State University in front of a sold-out Ray E. Didier field on Wednesday.
Softball enters its third consecutive weekend of tournament play as they head to Gulfport, Miss. for five games. The Colonels will take on Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Mississippi Valley State University, the University of Memphis, the University of Southern Mississippi and Baylor University. The Colonels will be returning to the field after their midweek game against Alcorn State was rained out. Last weekend, at the Black and Gold Tournament in Montgomery, Ala, Nicholls outscored their opponents 44-38, but will be stepping up in competition this weekend.
Men’s and Women’s tennis will travel to Statesboro, Ga, this weekend to compete in a round robin tournament. The men’s squad will be looking to avenge a 0-7 loss at Louisiana State University last weekend, while the women’s team will be looking to absorb an injury to senior All-Conference player Stephanie Barnett. The Women will open their Southland Regular Season Championship defense next week with two matches on campus Tuesday and Friday.
