Women’s basketball bounces back vs UNO
Nicholls State University’s women’s basketball team brought home a win against University of Orleans.
With a 3 pointer from forward LiAnn McCarthy in the first 20 seconds and a good jumper a few minutes later brought the Colonels to a 5-point lead helping set the momentum of the game.
Ending the first two periods in ties, the Colonels needed to win the next two quarters. With a total time of tying score at 7:24, UNO bought an end to the ties and took a high of 6-point lead. The Colonels brought their all in the third quarter as they had previously failed to do so in other games. Unlike previous third quarters in games, the Colonels took a 12-point lead against UNO.
“It’s a Physical game and you will get knocked down, but you will have to get up,” guard Cassidy Barrios said.
UNO continued to attempt to recover its lead on the Colonels, but was unable to keep a point difference lower than 8 points. With defense keeping a strong grasp in the last two quarter the Colonels were able to beat UNO after having lost in their previous encounter.
“Ironically the defense that looked so discombobulate in New Orleans was impenetrable tonight,” Head Coach DoBee Plaisance said.
Nicholls ended the 4th quarter with a losing- streak-ending win of 70-55 against the Privateers. With a high 15-point lead over UNO, Nicholls never let UNO get more than a 6-point lead.
McCarthy finished with a game-high of 21, guard Tia Charles 15, and guard Cassidy Barrios with 13 points.
“We did not make that much of adjustments. It was more about us and what we needed to do.” Plaisance said.
Winning the third quarter was not the only highlight of the night. McCarthy ended the game with 998 points in her basketball career with the Colonels. Reaching 1,000 points will make her the 14th player in the program to reach this milestone.
“I know I had to come out strong for my teammates and get us to the tournament,” said McCarthy.
With a game that ended the losses of the third quarter, showed what defense has, and game changing regroups the Colonels are ready to take on McNeese State University Saturday February 27.
“We lose it’s my fault, we win great kids,” Plaisance said.
